Episode #94: Baadasssss Metallimaina

This week, the show gets “real.” No, not that kind of real, real as in documentary film real. Wait, wait, wait. I know it sounds boring, but come on! It’s us! We promise we won’t go all Ken Burns on you. (Not that there’s anything wrong with Ken, he just doesn’t have that OTC edge that you have all come to love and expect.)

First up, we have out top six favorite documentaries. As you all know, you can make a doc out of any subject, so it should be an interesting compilation. Then we get into our two reviews.

Our first review is “Metallimania” from 1997. This doc was filmed during the height of Metallica’s career, right after the release of the Black album and just before Load was recorded (the release was delayed a few years after completion.) The majority of the doc is centered on Metallica fans. Now, I know that sounds awful, but, think about this statement towards the end of the film: “Metallica fans, as intelligent as they are diverse. As ugly as they are diverse…” and you have the sense of humor that the doc takes.

Trivia Fact: The Metallica camp fought the release of this doc.

Our second review of the week is for 2002’s Baadasssss Cinema. Made for The Independent Film Channel, this doc takes a look at Blaxploitation films during their very short but very popular heyday. There are many archive as well as new interviews with many people involved in the genre and many of our favorite films are spotlighted. Even though it is under an hour in length, it is packed with information.

Trivia Fact: In Death Proof, Shanna (Jordan Ladd) is wearing a t-shirt with this doc’s logo on it.

OTC Talk 10.27

Here is the recording from 10.27 Andrea joins us for some Halloween fun.

Episode #93: Bettie Page… Watermelon Man

This week, we have a very special announcement about the show. Of course, this is followed by what will go down as the best sound clip EVER. Then we get into the meat of the show. This week, the top six list is “Top Six Cult Flicks for Chicks.” It’s an interesting list and hopefully will generate some discussion. We follow that with our two reviews.

First up is the 1970 comedy / drama “Watermelon Man.” This socially satirical film was directed by Melvin Van Peebles, written by Herman Raucher and stars Godfrey Cambridge in the lead role of Jeff Greber. The story revolves around Jeff, who is a white man (and a bigot.) One morning and with no cause, he wakes up a black man. Now Jeff will see first hand how difficult it is for a black man during the civil rights movement.

Trivia fact – Taglines used for “Watermelon Man” that wouldn’t be acceptable today:

The Uppity Movie.

His white bread world just turned upside brown!

A very funny thing happened to Jeff Gerber. It won't happen to you, so you can laugh.

Our next feature is the docudrama Bettie Page: Dark Angel from 2004. Directed by Nico B. and written by Carly Adler and Nico B, this is the story of the last years of Bettie’s career with Irving Klaw as she tries to become a legitimate actress while posing for some of the most well known pictures ever.

Trivia fact – There actually were home air conditioners in the 1950’s.

Now, on to the housekeeping.
